Most modern smartphones can show live captions of speech, or transcribe a conversation on screen. iPhones (model 11 or later) have this built in. Android phones have Live Caption and Live Transcribe, both free. A real help in tricky moments and on video calls.
Relay UK is a free service regulated by Ofcom. Download the app, dial as normal, and a trained relay assistant types what the other person says so you can read it on screen — and speaks your typed replies back to the caller. Works for GP surgeries, banks, family. For emergencies, dial 18000 for Relay UK, or pre-register at emergencySMS.net to text 999.
UK regulations require all major TV channels to subtitle their programmes — press S or 888 on your remote. A wireless TV listener lets you set your own comfortable volume without affecting the main speaker. If your aids connect by Bluetooth, streaming TV sound directly into them is even clearer.
Look for the ear-with-T symbol at banks, post offices, theatres, churches and GP surgeries. Switch your hearing aid to T (telecoil) mode and the sound transmits directly to your aids, cutting out background noise. Under the Equality Act 2010, many public venues are required to provide them — ask at the desk if you can't see the symbol.
