Hearing Test in Newcastle
A full hearing assessment is £50 — and it comes off the price in full if you go ahead with hearing aids. An hour with an independent, HCPC-registered audiologist, at our Team Valley clinic ten minutes from the city centre, or in your own home.
The straight answer on price
Because nobody should have to ring round to find out.
| What you want | What it costs with us |
|---|---|
| Full hearing assessment | £50 — refunded in full against a hearing aid fitting |
| Ear Health Check (15 min otoscopy, tuning fork, pressure test) | £20 |
| Online hearing check, from home | Free |
| Ear wax removal, both ears, in clinic | £60 |
| Ear wax removal, both ears, at your home | £80 |
Why we charge when others don't. A free hearing test still gets paid for somewhere, and usually that's inside the price of the aids sold afterwards. We'd rather take £50 up front and give it straight back if you go ahead, so nothing we tell you depends on you buying anything. If you don't need aids, we'll say so, and you'll have paid £50 for an honest answer from a registered audiologist.
What actually happens, start to finish
About an hour. Nothing uncomfortable, nothing you can't stop.
1 · We talk first
Where does your hearing let you down? The pub, the phone, your grandchildren, the telly? This part shapes everything that follows, because the numbers on a chart don't tell us what you actually need.
2 · We look in both ears
A video otoscope on a screen you can see too. Often this alone explains it, because wax is one of the most common reasons people think their hearing has gone.
3 · We test properly
How your eardrums move, the quietest sounds you can hear across the speech range, and how well you make out words rather than just tones.
4 · You get the answer that day
Your results explained in plain English, on the spot, plus a written copy to take home. No "we'll call you". No sales pitch waiting at the end.
Three ways to get tested in Newcastle
Honestly compared. One of these will suit you better than the others.
| NHS | High-street chain | Independent clinic (us) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost of the test | Free | Usually free | £50, refunded against aids |
| How you get in | GP referral | Book direct | Book direct |
| Wait | Varies by trust | Usually days | Usually days |
| Choice of hearing aid | NHS range | Depends on that chain's supplier arrangements | Every manufacturer: Starkey, Phonak, Oticon, Signia, Widex, ReSound |
| Appointment length | Varies | Varies | An hour, unhurried |
| Home visits | Limited | Varies | Yes, across Newcastle and the North East |
If cost is the deciding factor, start with the NHS through your GP — it's a good service and we'll say so. If you want it dealt with quickly, with time to talk and the full choice of manufacturers, that's what an independent clinic is for.
Signs it's worth booking
- You turn the TV up louder than everyone else in the room likes
- You can hear people talking but can't make out the words, especially in a busy pub or restaurant
- You ask people to repeat themselves, or answer the wrong question
- Phone calls have got harder than they used to be
- There's ringing or buzzing in one or both ears
- You worked in industry, the pits, engineering or music, and never had it checked
Hearing loss creeps up slowly enough that most people are talked into it by their family rather than noticing themselves. If someone has nudged you towards this page, that's usually a fair sign.
